How to help seniors become independent

If you are a caregiver for a senior, you probably know just how vital it is to encourage him or her to be independent. Although at first, this might be a bit difficult for you, as it implies having to spend extra time teaching them how to use certain devices, in the long run, these small steps can help them develop a sense of independence that can lead to a happier life and a new-found confidence.

Physical activity

According to Tandy Elisala, one thing that you could do to achieve this is to give them the extra time necessary to dress themselves. Although they might struggle with this task at first, completing this challenge on a daily basis can make them feel good about themselves.

Similarly, it is advisable that you encourage seniors to get involved in tasks that are physically stimulating. For instance, it could be a good idea to do activities such as dancing or gardening. While dancing, one can meet new friends, and he/she can socialize.

However, remember that any type of physical activity has to be approved by a physician, as not all seniors can safely enjoy them.

Mental stimulation

What is more, Comfort Keepers recommends that you also supply seniors with plenty of mental stimulation. In other words, it might be a good idea to use cross puzzles and memory games in order to promote memory retention.

This is an essential step as mental stimulation has been linked to psychological well-being and a positive outlook on life. Even more so, it is advisable that seniors are encouraged to stay close to their relatives and to get involved in family life. For instance, they can be supported to spend time with their nephews in the afternoon.

Help them embrace technology

As you know, it comes a time when some seniors have to be assisted when it comes to utilizing apparatuses such as a Hoyer lift. To help them feel confident and secure during these times, it might be a good idea to aid them in learning how to utilize specific devices.

Even more so, you can help your senior friend learn how to use the internet to complete mundane tasks such as online shopping or paying the bills. This way, he or she will be able to get that sense of responsibility and independence back.

Also, it is crucial that the senior that you are taking care of owns a cell phone. This way, in case of an emergency, he/she can quickly call for help. If they find it challenging to use a smartphone, you can always invest in a special mobile phone that was specially designed to be used by people in this age category.

Why I like bagless vacuum cleaners

There are many differences between bagless and bagged vacuum cleaners. The vacuum cleaners with bag do the basic work of suction and collect all the dirt and debris in a replaceable bag. Once the bag fills completely you can replace it with a new empty bag available in grocery stores. In the case of bagless vacuum, the sucked dirt gets collected in a dust cup, that needs to be emptied when it fills up to the brim.

The bagless vacuum cleaners have a number of advantages over the vacuum cleaner with a bag. Let us discuss them one by one.

Cutting down on the expenses

With a bagless vacuum cleaner to help you in everyday cleaning, you don’t need to keep a stock of bags at home. So you save a good amount of money since no replaceable bags are needed in bagless models.

Powerful cleaning always

As the bag in a vacuum cleaner fills up with the dust, carpet and upholstery fibres and other debris, the vacuum cleaning efficiency declines since suction becomes tougher due to decreasing space for dirt. This limitation is not in a bagless vacuum cleaner. It always works with the same efficiency.

Easier cleaning

With a bagless vacuum cleaner, you just have to take out the dust cup, empty it and if you wish clean it thoroughly before replacing it in the appliance. No hassles at all. In the case of bagged vacuum cleaner, you must have the bag which fit your vacuum cleaner model. If you can’t get them, you may not be able to use the vacuum cleaner at all.

Low maintenance

A lightweight vacuum cleaner is always ready to work, requiring no replacements. It does not need separate replaceable bag so its maintenance is very easy. The only thing that you need to care about is to keep an eye on transparent dust cup before it filled completely. Just empty it and you are ready for the next round of tidiness. The vacuum cleaners with bag require precise attachment of the bag with the suction system to keep it working.

Among the array of home appliances, a vacuum cleaner is the most helpful appliance to keep your home clean and hygienic. It must be purchased after carefully considering your cleaning needs and frequency. For those of you who do frequent vacuuming don’t need large bags for dust collection. They can keep their homes at their sparkling best with a bagless vacuum cleaner.

Take your cleaning to a whole new level with these products

Everyone loves a clean home, but can you be sure that you always manage to make the last speck of dust go away? Cleaning a house may be a chore, but this only means that you should enlist more help to make it happen more easily. Let’s take a look at a few cleaning products that will make your job easy as a breeze.

Microfiber cloth

This is such a reliable cleaning product that it should not be amiss from any home. No matter how religious you are when you clean various surfaces from your countertops to the mirrors in your home, you may become exasperated with the small lint that seems to remain everywhere.

You can deal with this issue by wiping everything with a microfiber cloth that removes all the traces of cleaning substances and does not leave lint behind. You can polish everything to a mirror finish that will make your entire house sparkle.

An electric broom

Nothing does a better job for hard floors than an electric broom. If you are looking for a broom for wooden floors, there are plenty of models available. Standard vacuum cleaners do not do a too good job for such floors, and that is where an electric broom can intervene successfully.

Choose a model that can pick all the dust from the most difficult corners, to ensure that your home is spotless. You can also take a good look at the features offered, to see which model is the most suited for the type of chores you have in mind for it.

Stainless steel bucket

Do you have a particular item that keeps all your cleaning products together? If you don’t, it is probably quite a big hassle to march all over the house for one product or another, while you are in the middle of cleaning.

You can take your cleaning efforts to a whole new level if you decide to purchase a stainless steel bucket. Make sure to get one that is big enough to accommodate all the cleaning supplies you need, and use it to haul them everywhere you need them.

Vinegar and baking soda

You don’t have to spend big bucks on expensive cleaning products, as long as you have vinegar and baking soda at your disposal. These kitchen supplies can serve cleaning purposes just as well. In combination, or on their own, these substances can deal with the hardest to remove stains from your bathroom, kitchen, and anywhere else.

Make sure to use household gloves while you manipulate such substances to avoid harm to your hands. Vinegar and baking soda are great options because they can reduce the use of chemicals in your home.

3 tips for living a healthier lifestyle

My best friend is going to be married in August of this year. She’s always struggled with her weight problems, just like I did in the past. While in my case, the situation is somewhat different because I lost a lot of weight following a breakup, she didn’t go through the same thing. Over the years, she’s gained over 45 pounds.

While the matter doesn’t seem to bother her per se, the fact that she will have to get a wedding dress does. Nothing fits and she is terribly frustrated about all of this. She’s tried a lot of diets over the years, none of which have really worked, and the worst thing about it is that she’s always gotten back to eating loads of candy, pizza, and heaps and heaps of chips and fizzy drinks.

Her low self-esteem is what bothers me the most. I’ve tried telling her that the secret to losing weight and generally leading a healthier lifestyle is to eat a lot of veggies and fruit and give up nasty things like pastry and virtually anything that has no significant nutritional value. These things can make you feel full and satisfied, but they hardly do anything in terms of health. Actually, such carbohydrates can even have a bad effect on your cardiovascular system as they are usually linked to fat deposits on great vessels such as the aorta.

Of course, I’m not the perfect person to nag her about this as I used to weigh around 220 pounds. In somebody else’s books, this might not be a lot, but it definitely was for me. Now every year, when I start feeling a bit cold, I begin to consume a lot of cooked food like chili, mashed potatoes, and other concoctions of this sort. I know they aren’t healthy, but if I’m cold, I can’t help myself.

However, once the warm season returns, I get back to my regular lifestyle and start eating salads like crazy. That’s why every year, in the course of about six months, I lose about 17 to 18 pounds without really making an effort. The secret is to fill your stomach with as many veggies as possible so that you never get the feeling that you are starving.

I know that one of the greatest challenges of people who are overweight or obese is working out. Not only are they not in the mood to do this because there are other individuals who are fitter at the gym and they might feel bad about it, but they also can’t do a lot of exercise because of their current condition.

In my opinion, walking is the best simple exercise you can do. Working in the garden, going shopping, taking the kids to school, doing chores around the house; all of these activities can help you lose weight. You just have to do them on a regular basis and maintain a positive mindset about everything. If you believe you’re not capable of losing weight, it will never happen.

3 appliances you need whenever you move into a new home

Getting housewares and other items of this sort nowadays is quite complicated given that there’s so many to choose from. If you’ve recently moved into a new home, I believe I can give you several tips that can assist you in finding the right appliances you actually need. I used to live in rent and move from one place to the next rather regularly, so I’m kind of an expert in this field.

Some things I bought and took with me everywhere. And I’ll talk about them in the following paragraphs. So, if you’re having trouble determining which things are crucial and which ones you can buy later, I’m here to give you a hand. Check out the list I made of three basic appliances you actually need the services of.

Convection oven

If there isn’t a kitchen in the place you’re moving into, or you don’t have the freedom to use too many appliances, the best bet would be to get a convection oven. My advice is to buy a large one that comes with one rack so that you can prepare two pizzas at the same time. Basically, you can use a convection oven for a variety of things. You can make toast, heat up croissants and sandwiches, make pizza, and bake any treat.

My point here is that it’s a better idea to invest in a high-quality appliance that pretty much does the trick under most circumstances. Actually, the sky’s the limit when it comes to the creative things you can do with such an oven. Plus, it relies on electricity, so you won’t even need to bother with gas, although it is much cheaper than electricity.

Washer and dryer

Obviously, if you have enough space in your home or you live in an area where it’s always summer, you probably don’t need a dryer as you’ll hang your clothes outside, under the sun. However, for those who live in small apartments or share homes with others and as such, don’t benefit from enough room for that, getting the best washer and dryer is a good idea.

Even if you were to start prospecting the market for a combo, you would probably reach the conclusion that it’s hard to get the right model. On the one hand, this type of machine is way more expensive than a simple washer. Some models have two components mounted on top of the other. Others have settings for washing and drying although they look just like a washing machine. The latter are space savers.

Refrigerator with freezer capacity

Again, this is a space saver as you won’t have to get a fridge and a freezer. If you don’t have a big family, this is the perfect choice for you. If you do have three kids, it might be a problem. For a small family or just one that’s starting out, however, it’s a great alternative. Also, there’s nothing stopping you from selling it later on.

I love my new robotic vacuum

There’s nothing in this life I hate more than cleaning the house. Sometimes, the kids can get so messy that I can’t even take it anymore and I occasionally take them to their grandparents’ place so that I have some time to tidy up. It’s a busy schedule with everyone at work, taking them to school every morning, and just dealing with this whole mess called life.

Something that I have managed to do over time is get rid of most of my carpets. We live in San Diego, so there’s no reason to keep them around as my feet won’t get cold too soon. I own an upright vacuum cleaner for quite some time now and have been using it rather efficiently for the past three years. It’s convenient because it’s equipped with a battery that enables it to work for as many as thirty minutes per cleaning session.

Recently, however, I’ve been looking into getting a robotic vacuum because I just can’t seem to get the time to clean up the house. Now that the kids are somewhat older, I can tell them to do this and that, but there’s a certain limit to everything, and I won’t treat my children like slaves. In my opinion, this time is the best one for them to have fun, so I won’t spoil it.

Other than washing the dishes and taking out the trash, I can’t tell them to do too many things around the house. I am a great lover of hardwood floors and tile because they are particularly easy to clean. While there’s tile in my kitchen and bathrooms, I don’t have it in our living room, for example.

The thing that I found most bothersome about such a vacuum is that it costs a lot of money compared to traditional units. Some Bissell models, for example, can cost about seventy bucks but most of the robotic alternatives I came across are usually priced around over one hundred.

I started by prospecting the market by looking at the most expensive models out there. Some of those that come to mind are the Samsung VR9300K, the Dyson 360 Eye, the Neato Botvac, and the Hoover Pretty much all of these were off-putting for me and my budget. On the other hand, the Vileda was too cheap to consider, so I was rather wary about getting it. Nonetheless, after having looked through some of the reviews it had gathered, I quickly came to the conclusion that this unit was the perfect one for me.

Many of those who have bought it say that it struggles when it comes to cleaning large rugs, but the fact is I have zero such carpets in my house. I’m rather impressed with the way it performs on hardwood and tile, so I really have no complaints at all.
